"Libraries...are guardians of the local
heritage, and active cultural, educational, social, and economic
catalysts for communities...[and they] are often overlooked in local
economic and community development," in a report from Partners
for Livable Communities (Washington, D.C. 1994).
The report in Partners for
Livable Communities cites libraries as "important elements in the local
quality of life, and they are key criteria in business relocation and
expansion decisions." Money Magazine, for example, uses the quality of local libraries
as a factor in its annual ranking of the most livable cities.
Local businesses rely on libraries for information; the local business
owners in Tulsa, Oklahoma, ranked the Tulsa Public Library as "The
number one agency helping new manufacturers get started."
